Chandigarh September 5:
With elections to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council slated on September 12, the stage is set and the students are being wooed to cast their votes.
The first on the list is the Congress, which recently held a meeting of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) representatives, along with the Congress councillors to guide students about campaigning. The councillors said they will encourage students in their wards to vote for the NSUI. They said they would do this by making the youths aware of the ideology of the Congress.
B B Bahl, president of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee, said: “We will extend all possible support to the NSUI. The students will be given tips on campaigning. The councillors will help them in every way.” A visit by Sukhbir Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), meanwhile, gave a shot in the arm to Students’ Organisation of India (SOI). The student wing of the SAD, however, does not have much following on the campus, which is dominated by the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU). They had held a rally earlier in a show of strength.
Pardeep Singh, president, SOI said: “It is important that political parties extend support to the various student organisations. It also paves way for the student politicians to gradually enter mainstream politics.” Former BJP MP Satya Pal Jain, however, said: “The BJP does not interfere in the student body elections. Our youth wing does not support the organisation on the campus.”

Mohali August 31:
Six people sustained injuries after a mango tree fell on shops in the Sector-46 rehri market during a hailstorm on Saturday. Seven tin booths were destroyed in the incident that took place around 7.15 pm.
The injured are Ramesh Sharma, Joginder, Genda Lal, Manmohan Singh, Laxmi Kant and Sushil. They were buried under the debris of the tin sheds after the tree fell on the shops. While three of them were rescued, the others were rushed to hospitals.
Ramesh and Manmohan were taken to the GMCH-32, while Genda Lal was admitted in the PGI. All three are reportedly out of danger. Narrating the incident, rehri vendors said they had informed the fire station immediately after the incident but help reached late. Fire officer M L Sharma, however, dismissed the allegations and said: “The fire brigade wasted no time and reached the spot immediately.”
He added: “We cut the heavy branches of the mango tree and brought out the three from under the debris. The three were rushed to hospitals after the rescue operation.” A UT official said: “We have already made concrete booths for the rehri vendors and a majority of them have shifted to the permanent booths adjacent to the rehri market.”
Met officials said though the hailstorm lasted for over half an hour, it was not very strong. “The city has witnessed stronger storms. It was not serious enough to cause heavy damage,” said a Met department official.

Chandigarh August 29:
Basking in the glory of Abhinav Bindra’s rare feat of winning a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics, his doctor, Amit Bhattacharjee, was in for a rude shock earlier this week when he received a show-cause notice from the PGI’s gynaecology department, where he works, for accompanying the ace shooter.
Dr Bhattacharjee, Abhinav’s psychological trainer, is working as a research officer at the ICMR, department of obstetrics gynaecology department at the PGI. While he has received accolades for his contribution to Abhinav’s achievement, his own department seems to be going all out to penalise him. He has been associated with Abhinav for the past 12 years.
According to sources, Dr Bhattacharjee has been asked to explain why he had gone to Beijing when his leave application was sanctioned for a visit to West Bengal. The notice was sent to him on August 26 and he has to file a response by tomorrow. While Dr Bhattacharjee refused to comment on the issue, he confirmed that he had received the notice.
Sources close to him claimed that he had mentioned in his leave application that he would be going to “West Bengal and China”. He had applied for leave from August 4 to 14. He had mentioned that he would be going to China for personal work.
The notice, issued by Dr L.K. Dhaliwal, head of the department, asks him to explain the reasons for his Beijing visit and says that action would be initiated if he failed to give a reply. The sources claimed that he was upset at the move and had proceeded on medical leave. Dr Dhaliwal could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
