Lakhi of Rehmanpur village in Jalandhar Cantonment was found murdered in her house on July 17 and her son Lal Chand, who is a peon, had told the police that when he returned home, he found the house bolted from outside. “When I opened the door, I found my mother killed and some household articles lying scattered,” he had told the police.
Police found many contradictions in the statements of Lal Chand and rounded him up. During his interrogation, he admitted to have killed his mother by strangulating her, and to make it look like a murder, he scattered the household item around her body.

Kapurthala September:
Family of a woman, who had lodged a complaint of harassment against her in-laws, and their supporters including some municipal councillors from various parties, gheraoed the residence of Kapurthala SSP for nearly six hours alleging that police had let off the accused under the influence of a cabinet minister.
However, SSP Rakesh Aggarwal while denying the allegations held that the complainants were trying to put undue pressure on the police and also not cooperating in the investigation. Inderjit Singh, a resident of Sarabjit Nagar, said his daughter Harleen Kaur married Ravi Preet Sing of Chandigarh on March 1 this year and after some time they started harassing her.
On August 28 they tried to kill her and then threw her out of the home. She lodged a complaint with the local police and a case under sections 498A, 406, 307 and 34 of IPC was registered against her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law. The protesters alleged the police had taken the accused in custody but later released them under the influence of a cabinet minister. They said when they wanted to meet the SSP on Tuesday he did not entertain them.
SSP Aggarwal said the accused had pleaded that they were ready to face an enquiry and wanted a chance to prove their innocence. Denying any political pressure, he held that police had asked both the parties to join investigation but the woman's family held they would not see the police in front of the opposite party. ''They met me at 10 on Monday night at my residence and today also I said they should come to the office but they immediately started a dharna,'' he said.

Amritsar August 30:
The police has booked Bikramjit Singh, SHO of the Mehta police station and relative of a senior Akali leader, for allegedly demanding bribe for registering a case against the miscreants, who had barged into the house of the complainant’s relatives and beaten them up.
A case under Sections 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 389 of the IPC was registered against the SHO after an inquiry into the matter was conducted by a senior police officer. Paramjit Singh of Majitha had complained to SSP Iqbal Singh against the SHO. The SSP had marked the inquiry to the SP (headquarters). However, Paramjit gave an affidavit to the police after which a DSP-rank officer probed the matter.
The SSP said the SHO had been suspended. He said Paramjit’s maternal uncle Hardyal Singh, a resident of Butar Kalan village, falling under the Mehta police station, had a dispute with his brothers Bachiter Singh and Harbans Singh of the same village. On July 30, the miscreants barged into their house and beat up his relatives, including their three daughters. The miscreants were drunk.
They called up Bikramjit Singh, who asked them to see him next morning even as the miscreants abused them outside their house. When they approached the SHO next morning, he demanded Rs 30,000 for registering a case. The matter was settled for Rs 20,000, which they paid as they were scared after the July 30 incident. However, instead to taking any action against the miscreants, the SHO booked Paramjit’s uncle Hardyal and presented him in the court.
